The Leckerli Story
These traditional Swiss cookies were created in the 15th century by local spice merchants. They’re called Basler Leckerli, (or Läckerli) because they originated in Basel, Switzerland. Lecker is German for "delicious" and the suffix -li is the Swiss term for "little." These are delicious little bites! Similar to Lebkuchen, a traditional German Christmas cookie, leckerli somewhat resembles gingerbread. Soft but crunchy, sweet and spicy, leckerli cookies are joy and celebration in a neat little square.
Different regions of Switzerland have different types of leckerli, each with its own characteristic texture. Some are soft, some are crunchy and some are in between. Recipes typically include honey, spices, nuts, candied citrus peel, a splash of liquor and a sugar glaze.
André’s Basler Leckerli Cookies are made using a centuries-old recipe brought to America by André Bollier, a master pastry chef who trained in Basel, Switzerland almost 100 years ago. His method of making leckerli has been passed down through three generations of the Bollier family and is the beloved, classic recipe we still use today.
Basler leckerli prides itself on being more chewy than crisp. The texture is soft when humid (kept in an airtight container) or hard when dry. The flavor is a perfect blend of spices, honey, whole wheat, fresh roasted nuts and house-candied fruit that brings people back to old-world Switzerland.
The scherenschnitte art on our leckerli packaging is an homage to the Swiss art of paper-cutting. The care and tradition of scherenschnitte reflect the heritage of the Bollier family who, after three generations, bring the same precision and beauty to confectionery-making.
From our family to you at holiday time or anytime, we hope you enjoy each and every delicious little bite!
